Art 1 Final Portfolio

Which project was your favorite or most successful this semester? Please explain.
Out of all the projects this semester, my favorite was probably the canvas painting. I loved this project because I was very successful in it, and I really learned a lot. One of the best parts of this project was learning about colors, combinations, and how to paint simple things. I learned about primary, secondary, and tertiary colors. Because of this project, my knowledge on colors has grown. Before this, I didn't know anything about warm, cool, complementary or mixing colors. I have also learned what colors do and don't go together, and I have realized that there are so many different shades and tones of colors to use in painting. I was able to include all three foreground, middle ground and background in the painting, and I feel i did well on it. I would never have been able to paint like this if I hadn't learned all about colors like I did from this unit.

Regardless of whether you liked or disliked a project, which one did you learn, grow, or developed the most from? Please explain.
The project I learned the most from was the Game Drawing project. I learned more in this project than any of the others. We learned all about one and two point perspective. This project helped me grow as an artist because now I know how to draw objects and pictures in perspective. I did not realize how often perspective is used in art, and it is definitely something everyone should learn how to use. I also learned how to use water colors and colored pencils correctly. This project did take a lot of work, and you had to learn how to use the ruler correctly in order to make it look good. The game drawing was the most helpful and I learned the most from this project.

Choose 1 piece of Art that you used skills and techniques learned from previous projects. Discuss your growth as an artist and how you incorporated these skills and techniques to create the piece.
One piece of art I used previous skills and techniques was the chalk mural project. In the very begging of the semester, we began learning about values and shades from the value study drawings. Our group did very well with shading and the colors in the angel wings. This was probably one of the most beneficial projects, because a lot of the things we learned in this unit were used in all the units afterward. The chalk mural project made me grow as an artist because I gained insight on all the things used in drawing, shading, values, and shadows. It helped me as an artist because the things I learned in this unit I used in all the units afterward. This was a very fun and successful project. The basics I learned in this project made it very memorable and one that I enjoyed a lot.

Which project do you feel was the least important in learning the concepts taught in this course? Please explain.
The project that i felt was the least important in learning was the printmaking project. I did not like it as much because I didn't feel like i would ever use those  kind of skills again on another project. Printmaking was difficult and most of the unit was learning about lines, shapes, foreground, middle ground and background.  You had to know just the right amount of paint and pressure to use when painting, or the quality would not turn out as good. i did not get as into the project as i had with the others. One of the reasons i probably felt this way about printmaking is that I wasn't very successful with it. In the other projects, you would use colors, contrast, and perspective more than you would use carving and lines. This is why I felt the printmaking project was not as important as the other we did.

Choose a piece of artwork where the subject matter reflects you as an artist; one that you have a personal connection to. Please explain your choice.
The major piece of art I completed that really reflected me and I had a personal connection with was my clay tile. When I began molding and shaping my clay, I thought it didn't look right and that it wouldn't turn out good. After the clay was fired, and painted, I became very happy with my final product. The reason why I choose the animal I did is because I have a personal memory of this animal. It is a Canadian Loon, and every year we go to Canada, we enjoy seeing and listening to these beautiful birds. I think it turned out great with the clay, and being able to do the 3D on the tile really made the birds stand out. It was also a lot of fun painting the clay tiles and seeing how different they look compared to being fired. This was definitely one of my favorite projects.
